Episode 129 – Living with chronic illness: finding purpose in the present
Living with chronic illness can feel like you’re stuck in a perpetual waiting room – waiting for better health, a diagnosis, or for life to feel “normal” again.
But what if we reframed this time? ✨
In today’s podcast episode, I’m talking about finding purpose in the present and cultivating meaning during this challenging chapter.
Here’s what we explore:
– Staying connected (even when it’s hard)
– Prioritising self-care that actually works for your body
– Embracing adapted independence within your abilities
– Cultivating self-awareness and emotional intelligence
Remember: living with chronic illness is NOT a reflection of your worth. It’s an opportunity to build a meaningful life that honours who you are NOW.
You’re developing resilience, compassion, and wisdom that will serve you regardless of how your health evolves.

Hello loves, how are you today?
Today I want to talk about finding purpose in the present when you live with chronic illness. Living with a chronic illness can feel like you’re in a perpetual waiting room – waiting for better health, waiting for a diagnosis, waiting for treatment to work, or waiting for life to feel “normal” again. But what if we reframed this time? What if, instead of viewing it as a holding pattern, we saw it as an opportunity?
It’s crucial to shift our perspective and ask ourselves some important questions: Who do I want to be when my health improves? What new abilities and coping tools will I have developed? How will I feel about myself? What wisdom will I carry forward from this experience?
To find contentment whilst navigating chronic illness, we must embrace this period as more than just an endurance test. Here are some ways to cultivate meaning and happiness during this challenging chapter.
Stay Connected
Make a conscious effort to continue connecting and communicating with others, even when it feels difficult. And I know that it can feel difficult. Often the last thing I want to do is be sociable, but it can make a huge difference. Use your interactions as opportunities to know yourself better rather than solely seeking validation or understanding from others. This isn’t selfish – it’s a meaningful and life-changing practice.
Shift your perspective from simply “managing social obligations” to creating genuine connections. Be open to meeting people who understand chronic illness, and engage in honest conversations that allow you to learn more about yourself and others. However, remember that you’re not responsible for managing other people’s discomfort with your illness. Focus on being kinder to yourself and not repeating unhealthy patterns, such as overextending yourself to please others or hiding your struggles to avoid burdening people.
Prioritise Self-Care
Take the time to prioritise your physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing – and understand that self-care with chronic illness looks different from mainstream wellness culture. Explore different practices that work within your limitations: gentle movement, meditation, journaling, or engaging in hobbies that bring you joy without depleting your limited energy reserves.
By nurturing yourself compassionately, you’ll develop a stronger sense of self and become more resilient. Self-care isn’t indulgent when you’re chronically ill – it’s essential maintenance.
Embrace Adapted Independence
Develop your independence and self-reliance within the context of your abilities. This doesn’t mean refusing help or pushing yourself beyond your limits. Rather, it means embracing the freedom to make decisions that honour your needs and taking on challenges that are meaningful to you.
Reflect on what you truly want from life – not what you think you “should” want or what you could do before your illness. Ask yourself what brings you joy and fulfilment now. This self-reflection will help you identify your current passions, interests, and realistic goals.
Cultivate a deeper understanding of yourself and develop new abilities that can enhance your life despite your limitations. Start pursuing activities, hobbies, or projects that you’ve always been curious about but didn’t have the courage to try. This might look different now – perhaps smaller, more adapted, or modified – and that’s perfectly fine.
Cultivate Self-Awareness
Develop a deeper sense of self-awareness and emotional intelligence. Take time to reflect on how chronic illness has changed you and identify any patterns or behaviours you want to shift. Perhaps you’re prone to minimising your symptoms, taking on too much, or isolating yourself when struggling.
Engage in introspection and seek growth through therapy, support groups, or coaching. By developing emotional intelligence around your illness experience, you’ll be better equipped to navigate life with empathy, clear communication, and healthy boundaries.
My SHIFT to Alignment coaching programme is about empowering you to live life on your own terms. Not mine. Not someone else’s. Yours. To take back the life a chronic illness stole from you. Every step of the way is about finding clarity, allowing and creating intention, and taking action as we work through your mindset blocks into the most aligned, powerful and magical version of yourself. And now you can have a taster of that in a free mini SHIFT that I’m creating. Five bite-sized units that you complete at your own pace. You can get on the waitlist at lifeinalign.com/minishift.
Remember Your Worth
Living with chronic illness is not a reflection of your worth or value. It’s an opportunity to build a meaningful life that honours who you are now, not who you were before diagnosis or who you hope to be “when you’re better.” By investing in your own growth and wellbeing within your current reality, you’re developing resilience, compassion, and wisdom that will serve you regardless of how your health evolves.
Embrace this time, make the most of it within your limitations, and honour the journey of self-discovery that chronic illness can offer – however unwillingly you embarked upon it.
Thanks for listening to this episode of the Life in Align podcast.
And remember, you are worth it, and you get to choose.
Have a lovely day.
